About Exhibition

“White eel in the dawn of the exile” by Ubatsat is an art exhibition that explores the transformation of complex geography that resulted from the Basin Development Strategy. The artworks reflect a structure of natural unusualness which are modeled from myths and experience of the local people who live along the waterfront as well as the public sectors who are thriving to go against the system of socialist market economy in this dystopian society.

Artist’s Biography

Ubatsat

b. 1980, Thailand, lives and works in Chiang Mai, Thailand

“Ubatsat” is a pseudonym of an artist-social activist. Graduated from the Faculty of Fine Arts, Chiang Mai University, Ubatsat pursued his Master’s degree in Philosophy and Religion at the Faculty of Humanities, Chiang Mai University, and is currently a PhD candidate at the Buddhism university Mahachulalongkornrajavidyalaya.

Ubatsat focuses on collective practice with the attempt to create understandings about the people under pressure or in crisis. By collaborating with farmers, craftsmen, musicians, cooks, and specialists, Ubatsat creates a platform where everyone can participate, and host activities that are considered desirable in a democratic society.

His previous exhibitions and projects include The Sleeping Volcano on Crazy Star (2012); MUANG NAI (S) MOG (2013); Across the sea of star (2017); Semiotics of Seven Sian Samurai (2019); solo exhibition SOX STARS (CMU Art & Culture Center, March 24, 2019); and Entwine: Maybank Women Eco-Weavers Travelling Exhibition (National Museum of Singapore, 2019). He participated in the Rikuzentakata Artist in Residence Program (Japan, 2017).

Ubatsat currently lives and works in Chiang Mai. He works as an artist, an artist assistant and a social activist.
